This 2016 HR-V came in for its logbook service and a CVT service in the same visit. The engine oil and oil filter were changed, with oil that meets Honda's specification, and the car had the full inspection every service gets. For the transmission, the pan came off rather than just the drain plug: the old filter came out and a new one went in, the pan was cleaned, and the CVT was refilled with Penrite CVT fluid. A Honda CVT depends on its fluid more than most transmissions do, so it is worth changing on schedule rather than leaving it.

In a CVT the fluid does more than lubricate: the belt and pulleys rely on it to grip and carry the drive. As it ages, the transmission has less to work with. Change it at the interval in your logbook, and sooner if the car does a lot of short trips, stop-start traffic or towing, or came to you without service records.

Draining from the plug alone leaves a good share of the old fluid inside the transmission, and the filter stays where it is. With the pan off, the filter can be replaced and the pan cleaned out before any new fluid goes in.

The old and new filters were laid side by side before the new one went in, and the pan was cleaned before it was refitted.

The CVT was refilled with Penrite CVT fluid. Penrite is an Australian oil company.

Engine oil to Honda's specification and a new oil filter, then the checks every service includes: a diagnostic scan, brakes, tyres, fluid levels and a general mechanical and safety inspection, written on a checklist the owner takes away. Anything outside the quote is raised with the owner before it is done.
