In the factory opening
The head unit sits where the radio was, behind a surround made for this Mazda3, so the dash looks like it came this way.
The factory radio in a 2010 Mazda3 replaced with a touchscreen head unit running Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, fitted in the factory opening at our Oakleigh South workshop in Melbourne. $450 fitted.
This 2010 Mazda3 came in with its factory radio. The new head unit fits the factory opening with a surround made for the car, so the vents, the hazard switch and the climate controls are untouched, and the small display at the top of the dash stays as it was. Apple CarPlay comes up when the phone connects, and the screen is wide enough to show the map beside the music. On a Japanese car like this it's $450 fitted, and CarPlay takes about 1.5 hours in the workshop. All work is backed by a one-year warranty on parts and installation.

Apple CarPlay can split the screen, with navigation on one side and what's playing on the other.

This is the same generation of Mazda3 as our 2011 case, where the owner kept the radio and had a screen fitted on top of the dash instead. Replacing the radio with a head unit is $450; the screen on the dash is $300. Add a reverse camera to either for $150.
