A CarPlay screen, reverse camera and painted parking sensors on a 2011 Mazda3

A 2011 Mazda3 with no factory screen, fitted with a wide Apple CarPlay and Android Auto screen on the dash, a reverse camera and four rear parking sensors painted to match, at our Oakleigh South workshop in Melbourne. $830 fitted all up.

This 2011 Mazda3 had its factory radio and no screen. Rather than replace the radio, the new screen sits on top of the dash: a wide unit that runs Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, shown here with the map beside the music. A reverse camera above the rear number plate shows on it when the car goes into reverse. At the back, four parking sensors went into the bumper, painted in the car's blue, and a small display on the dash shows how close you are. All work is backed by a one-year warranty on parts and installation.

How it was done

No factory screen, so the screen goes on top.

01

The factory radio stays

The Mazda's radio, climate controls and vents are left as they were. The new screen sits on the top of the dash, close to where the driver is already looking.

02

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Both run on the new screen. In the photo it is Android Auto, with navigation and music side by side.

03

Reverse camera on the new screen

A compact camera mounts above the rear number plate, and its picture comes up on the screen when the car goes into reverse.

04

Parking sensors painted to match

Four sensors set into the rear bumper and painted in the car's blue, so they blend in rather than stand out as black dots. They beep as the car gets closer to whatever is behind it. Unpainted sensors are $330.

05

A distance display on the dash

A small display on the right of the dash shows the distance from the sensors, so the warning is something you can see as well as hear.

06

Screen on the dash, or a new head unit

A screen on the dash suits a car where the owner wants to keep the radio. Where the factory opening allows, a new head unit is the neater fit: $450 on a Japanese or Korean car, or $600 with the reverse camera. Send us a photo of your dash and we'll tell you which suits yours.
